Dundee's Sons of Spielberg
man ALIVE Studios was established in Dundee in 2006 by University of Dundee graduates Liam Johnston and Stuart Hamilton and animator James Law. The company grew out of a love of film, with Liam and Stuart learning their craft producing a number of short comedy films.
Of their inspiration, Liam lists other film-makers, actors and writers: 'early examples would include George Lucas, for his pioneering attitude, M.Night Shyamalan, for the excellent insights he shared in the special features of his first few successful films, and British artists like Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant or Simon Pegg & Edgar Wright. Essentially we are inspired by people who just take an idea and run with it'.
One of man ALIVE's most recent productions, 'Sons of Spielberg', was born from this ethos. Filmed in Dundee, the project is a comedy web series based on the Liam and Stuart's own experiences. The series follows the trials and tribulations of three filmmakers as they make their way in the industry, from trying out action shots on the fly to pitching for their first paid job. The highly entertaining first two episodes ('Three is Company' and 'Size Matters') recently screened at Write Shoot Cut's monthly short film night in Edinburgh.
